On Saturday, May 10, 2025, a tornado struck the Town of Esto, causing significant damage along Highway 2, Highway 79, and surrounding areas. The storm brought down trees, power poles, and utility lines, and damaged homes, businesses, and public infrastructure. While the damage was widespread, we are grateful that only one injury was reported.

Emergency response began immediately following the storm. The Esto Volunteer Fire Department, Holmes County Sheriff’s Office, Holmes County EMS, FDOT and utility crews worked through the weekend to clear roads, assist residents, and restore services. Thanks to their efforts, power was restored to most of Esto by Sunday evening. West Florida Electric Cooperative confirmed full power restoration to all customers by Monday, May 12.

The Town’s water system remained operational throughout the event thanks to the loan of a generator from the Florida Rural Water Association.

Ongoing Cleanup and Support

Cleanup operations are progressing steadily, though challenges remain. Work crews from the Florida State Guard, the Florida Forest Service, and Holmes County Sheriff’s Office inmate work crews have been actively removing debris and clearing roadways.

The primary goal of these teams is to ensure emergency vehicles can access homes and properties in the affected areas. Their work typically stops at clearing driveways and access routes. These crews will be cutting and stacking trees and brush near the road right-of-way for later pickup.

Additional help is on the way: Team Rubicon, a volunteer disaster relief organization partnered with the state, will be arriving in the coming days to assist residents with clearing fallen trees and yard debris.

Residents should separate storm debris into two piles:

  • Vegetative Debris: tree limbs, trunks, brush, etc.
  • Construction/Damage Debris: roofing, siding, metal, wood, and other storm-related materials.

Do not bag debris. Place debris as close to the road right-of-way as safely possible, while keeping roads and driveways clear.

Right of Entry Forms Required

If you need help clearing debris on your property, you must sign a Right of Entry and Hold Harmless Agreement. This allows work crews or volunteers to enter your property and confirms the county and its partners are not liable for accidental property damage. Forms are available through Holmes County Emergency Management.
