Why is My Water Bill So High This Month?
We know many residents are seeing higher-than-usual water bills for January 2025, and we want to help explain why. There are a few factors that have contributed to this increase:
- Winter Storm Impact (January 20-24): During the powerful winter storm that hit our area, temperatures dropped below freezing for several days. Many residents left water taps or spigots dripping to prevent pipes from freezing. While this is an effective precaution, keeping a faucet running for extended periods can add hundreds of gallons to a water bill. Additionally, some residents experienced frozen or broken pipes, leading to substantial water loss and higher bills.
- 2025 Water Rate Increase: Starting in January, the new water rates for 2025 went into effect. This includes an increase in the base rate for up to 2,000 gallons of water usage and a higher price for any water used beyond that base. You can view the new rates here.
- Billing Period Adjustments: The December 2024 water meter readings were taken a few days early due to the Christmas holiday, and January’s readings were taken a few days late due to the winter storm. As a result, the January 2025 bills cover a longer period of usage, from December 19, 2024, through January 28, 2025.
